You’ve worked hard to have a gorgeous yard that includes plenty of stunning trees. Gordon Pro Tree Service can help you keep your trees in the best shape possible with annual pruning and inspections. There are some things in Georgia that can actually kill your trees. We are going to list these fungi and pests below, plus, signs that your trees are suffering from them.
Plum and cherry trees in Georgia are susceptible to a fungus called “black knot.” The reason for its name is simple: parts of the tree will end up with black knots or bumps on its surface. Your plum and cherry trees have plenty of natural knots on them, but if any of them are dark in color, this portion of the tree is being eaten alive by fungus. Black knot will grow if left untreated, which leaves your plum or cherry tree in danger of collapsing or partially collapsing.
Powdery mildew can form on all of your garden plants including the trees. The trees in Georgia that end up with powdery mildew infections the most are dogwoods and crepe myrtles. If you inspect your trees’ leaves and see what looks like a white powder on them, the tree has powdery mildew. This fungus grows well if the tree is not pruned to allow ample airflow through the leaves.
Your oak trees can end up with leaf blister if they are overwatered and do not have adequate drainage. Inspect your oak trees for leaf blister by looking at the leaves closely for lesions. These lesions will be light yellow – almost white – or yellowish-brown in color. The lesions can kill off the tree leaves and leave you with a dying oak tree in your front or back yard.
It’s hard to kill a pine tree. These trees are hardy… that is, until they get infested with pine beetles. Pine beetles think a pine tree is a seven-course, four-star meal. The beetles utilize the tree bark as food and for their homes. For example, a female pine beetle will bore into the pine bark to create a nest where she can lay her eggs. White bumps of pine resin are a sign of pine beetles
Finally, aphids can infest your entire garden and cause serious damage. They feed off the leaves of all plants, including your trees. You can see the little green monsters packed underneath the leaves sucking the life out of them. This will leave your tree leaves with yellow spots on them. The best way to get rid of aphids is to release a ton of ladybugs into your trees. They eat them.
